Family Nights

These materials are for organizations wishing to connect with groups of families and convince those families that early math education in the home will positively and greatly change the rest of their children’s lives, and is something that is fun, easy, and natural for them to do.

These events are modeled after the outreach activities of the MILO program at the Utah STEM Action Center. Their Family Nights have connected with over 8000 families in Utah and have a 95% success rate of winning over the hearts and minds of those families. They have a wonderful introductory video for families that you may enjoy watching all on its own.

Five Flags Peak game. MILO uses the game Happy Bunny for their events. As a very low cost alternative, Math for Love and Early Family Math have designed a new game, Five Flags Peak, that can be produced for a little over $1. Download the new game by itself, or download it as part of the Family Night kit. Note that you will need written permission from Math for Love and EFM for any commercial use, or production for any non-commercial use of over 100 copies of the game.

By the way, when you print the game board, you may want to use stiff paper, and please adjust your printer settings to fit the board on the page.

Family Night kits. These kits include the Five Flags Peak game and directions for how to run a Family Night including an entry and exit survey. Please share your results with us and give us feedback on these kits. Also, if you do this within the state of Utah, the Utah STEM Action Center would love to have the results from your surveys.
